In the Explain Like I’m Five about William’s essay “Pay attention to the man behind the curtain: The importance of identity in academic writing”, I introduced the the main idea of what the article is about in the beginning of the analysis. Forwarding in academic writing is “almost always intended to persuade a third reader”, or through my article on Williams I am persuading or explaining the ideas of Williams by forwarding his ideas onto a new reader (Harris 36). The main forwarding methods that are used in my article are borrowing and extending. These two ideas are interconnected in the my interpretation of William’s essay on identity in academia. I also borrowed ideas from WIlliam’s as well as extended and built upon them. By using these methods I have begun to simplify them into an understandable form. The borrowing comes into play because all of the ideas are borrowed from Williams essay, since that is the main point of discussion. Another method of forwarding that is in the essay is Authorizing. By citing Williams in the essay, I can associate William’s ideas with mine. Since both of our ideas seem to agree we are perceived as a reputable source. Also in my essay on Williams I tried to keep my essay as short as I could, this is because my essay is in the form of a Reddit Explain Like I’m Five.
