Barden's Weapons Case

In this newspaper article, Mark and Jackie Barden, the parents of Daniel Barden who was shot and murdered in his first-grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School on 2012 respond to Bernie Sanders, the senator who commented on their lawsuit in his recent presidential debate in Michigan. Sanders suggested that the point of Daniel’s parent’s case is to hold Remington Arms Company liable because one of its weapons was used to murder several children. It talks about and states the facts of the numbers of Americans who are killed every day by a gun especially children under 19. It explains that a group of Iowa lawmakers want to make it easier for kids to access a handgun and it states that The State House of Representatives voted to allow children under age 14 to use a pistol, revolver or the ammunition with parental supervision. The author explains that children are not supposed to use guns, have any idea where their parent or guardian is storing the guns in their homes or even be near a gun, it states that children aren’t small adults and that they frequently make poor decisions because their brains are immature. First of all, this article gives a really good introduction to the gun control issue. It explains that children aren’t supposed to be near guns which is a big part of the issue of gun control. Second of all, one of the main reasons gun control is one of top issues in the United States is children dying unintentionally every day by a gun. The article actually stated that the United States has one of the highest reported rates of unintentional child gun deaths in the world. It suggests three laws that if implemented, the death percentage from gun violence may dramatically decrease. These three laws that this article suggests might decline the violence by as much as 90% according to their reports, and these laws are universal background checks for firearms sales, background checks on those buying ammunition, and a requirement that gun owners get their firearms microchipped or fingerprinted for identification purposes. The article didn’t really fulfil its purpose which is to convince the reader that these three specific laws can really reduce gun violence. It didn’t explain how these laws can help the nation or how are these laws going to be implemented. Melissa Healy, the author of this newspaper article did explain that not all the gun laws in the United States were effective or helped out, some of these laws even raised the rate of deaths caused by guns. This source or article seems to be similar to the one before it because both sources suggest solutions that can help reduce the deaths of gun violence. Both articles argue about two issues caused by guns and how to fix these issues by establishing new
