The first example the article presents was how some schools would often “push-out” some of the troubled students (3). The author tells one such example of Sarah Miller, while in high school Sarah would often skipped classes to go out with her friends, but when the time came to buckle down and work on improving her grades, the school was reluctant to help her and instead offered her to quit school. The article then illustrates the effect low income families can have on a child’s education. The second example that Thornburgh presents, how some students often feel isolated or misplaced in the high school environment, often causing them to drop out. He called these cases “The restless ones” (4). The article states how public education rallies “around the notion that every child should be prepared for higher education… with admissions to college as the goal,” rather than focusing on getting a general education (5). Thornburgh illustrates the making of different programs such as GEAR UP and Upward Bound in each state to try and aid the childs who need help with their education. The last example the author states, is how some of the kid decided to come back to high school, despite dropping out once already, he called these kids “The comeback kids.” The author tells the story of a young man named Ryan Tindle, who dropped out of high school, and later got sent to a juvenile correctional facility. After his time served he decide to go back to high school and earn a diploma. Although, it was not easy for him, he managed to graduate. The article illustrates the time change and the evolution of our society, and how in the old days a person could get a high paying job without a high school education.
