Slang Can Be a Positive Thing
Many articles are written in order to discuss topics that people do not agree with. Martin Grebing wrote an article titled “Don’t Say Animations” in order to argue that the use of slang or improper grammar in a professional field makes the speaker sound ignorant. Martin Grebing claims that the use of slang in the business world takes away from the appearance of professionalism and cliches make you seem as if you do not know what you are talking about; it is the professionals job to be vigilant in the use of proper language. On the contrary, the use of slang in the professional realm can be beneficial. Just because someone has high standing does not mean that they would seem unprofessional if they used slang.

He compared a new graduate calling themselves a “Major Epic Feature Film Animation Production Company” to such things as using cliches or slang in an advertisement. (Grebing p.1) On the contrary, using clear language is more effective at getting across your point something that professionals need to be able to do, than the use of jargon. In truth, the thing that were compared are not alike. Claiming that you are something you are not is no only unprofessional, but it is simply lying. On the other hand, using a slang term that is frequently used in your place of business to express a commonly held idea is actually beneficial. Schriver , Creek, and Mercer said ,“..if your readers can find the material they need , understand it the first time they read it, and use that information to perform their task (or the task you want them to perform), it’s plain language”. It is pointless to talk about a topic in whimsical terms when a simple word-even if it may be considered slang- is much more clear. The writer’s comparison of slang with such things as deception was an exaggeration that was meant to push forward the point of slang being …show more content…
If professionals use made-up slang words they may become main stream and become used by the public. As long as the information is being communicated effectively and in a precise manner then the audience can clearly understand what is being talked about and the fact that slang is used commonly becomes null. Overall, the proper use of communication is professional. Sukhpreet said “..there is a larger need to connect with each other in person and go beyond the words spoken to understand the actual motivation/intention behind a conversation”( 1). Thus, communication is far more than just expressing yourself with words. Why a person is saying something is just as important if not more than what they are saying. So, if a slang term is being used in order to simply, and effectively bring a point across than it may be

While the jargon may be difficult to comprehend at first it is a beneficial tactic to use. She goes on to explain that she learned to love the so called “language” and it became very easy to use once learned. An example of descriptive language is quoted in the Life under the Chief Doublespeak Office by William Lutz in paragraph seven, “With doublespeak, banks don’t have “bad loans” or “bad debts”; they have “nonperforming assets” or “nonperforming credits” which are “rolled over” or “rescheduled”.” (Lutz, n.d., Para. 7). I think that the above, descriptive writing pattern being used well by the writer by the writer, William Lutz not only shows the doublespeak language used, but what others may know the word of doublespeak as. An example to back up my reason is quoted in paragraph eight in the essay, Life under the Chief Doublespeak Officer, “No one gets fired these days, and no one gets laid off. We use slang in English to communicate effectively in an informal manner, and with some degree of humor. In Slang Origins by Woody Allen, the author explains how a variety of phrases became known as slang. Allen included stories of slang derived from marital customs and how the woman accepted or rejected the proposal, misunderstandings because of not being able to hear what someone else said properly, and ones that started because of something a single person did that was amusing. These origins stories sound foolish but I believe that the humor is what caused them to be passed down generations and remain prevalent in society today. Some of the origins of slang come from marital customs such as “got into a beef” or “to look down one’s nose”.…
