When speaking of obligations, one is also speaking of responsibilities. Characters dodge their obligations because the thrill of being free and having a choice overrules their responsibilities. No one likes to be told what to do or how to do it, yet alone be forced to do it. When the opportunity to be free of worry presents itself, this is when choices become more difficult to choose because nothing is sweeter than adventure and thrill. The characters in “Would Our Two New Lives Include a Third” and “We Real Cool” are in similar situations when speaking of the thirst for adventure, but they handle things a lot differently due to the choices they made in the end. “Would Our Two New Lives Include a Third” is a short story describing …show more content…
The author describes a scene at a pool hall in which she witnessed a handful of boys during school hours. The first question someone might ask is why those boys are skipping out on school. Another question that might arise is, why the author herself is there to witness the boys during school hours. The author states “We real cool. We Left school”. Throughout the entire poem, the author writes in the first person leaving to believe that she is part of the group in her poem. Though they are few words, it is clear that the author is just wanting to be accepted by the group and goes along so she would not be referred to as the outcast. She is caught in the moment of acceptance and freedom to choose whatever gives the rush of excitement she is seeking. Although she is content with being rebellious, the thirst for adventure will soon be over. Reality will soon kick in and she will be forced to fulfill the obligations and responsibilities she so deeply wished she could dodge. In the end of the poem, the author realizes that her responsibilities are overpowering her desire to continue her rebellious behavior. She ends her poem by saying “We Die soon”. Excellent, response to the discussion. I do agree with you about the boys getting a kick out of skipping school. My interpretations cause me to lean toward mischievous, rather than rebellious, since they were in a pool hall and not driving drunk or fighting. The audio version of the poem was outstanding and how she emphasized the word “WE,” which captured each line about being cool after dropping out of school. What caused Gwendolyn Brooks to peer inside the pool hall?…
