In the poem by Phillis Wheatley the writer expresses her admiration for the painter that brings such life and three-dimensional effect. She also appears to be acquainted with the painter in some way. The language theme evokes a feeling as though both the painter and the writer shares some common thread of experiences in this life.
The first stanza,” and thought in living characters to paint”, the writer was successful in painting a picture with use of language to express how the painting is great and life-like. Is she acquainted with the artist? Or do they just share common experiences relative to the time in which they lived? “we, on thy pinions can surpass the wind, and leave the rolling universe behind”. Here I get the feelings that they are both young artists who have received fame for their work respectively, even with the fame and recognition they have gained she admonished the painter to fix his goal on the afterlife, where they will finally find peace.

I was particularly interested in the stanza “that splendid city crowned with endless day “imagery used gives reminiscence of pure bliss, wonder and longing. I particularly liked her use of spiritual language and her use of metaphor to describe the work in praises and admonishment to the artist. I also appreciated the fact that she acknowledges both herself and the painter's work, which might not have been well received as other artists during that era. I had the feeling of hope, that her work could somehow help to break the barrier of slavery and racism. If Phillis Wheatley was alive today to see how far people of color have come, she would be impressed, although racism is still very much
