Delivering effective communicate is vital in providing compassionate care, allowing patients and families to understand and cope with uncertain situations (NMC 2008; Donnelly and Neville 2008). Communication is defined as, the reaching of mutual understanding through sharing information, ideas, and emotions, that allow the creation of meaning (Brooks and Heath 1985). My goal was to diffuse the situation, to reduce the stress felt by the Son and answer his questions satisfactory. This required effective communication and leadership. Leadership is defined as influence, including using interpersonal skills that allow others to be induced into accomplishing specific goals (Sullivan and Garland 2010). Informing the Son, that I was not fully aware of his father’s situation, upheld my professional duty to be open and honest.
