Have you ever felt so alone that you drive yourself to commit crimes just so you can have someone interested in you? That’s how Roger felt in the story Thank You, Ma’am by Langston Hughes. In the story skinny Roger runs up behind big Ms. Luella Bates Washington Jones and tries to steal her purse. Fortunately for Ms. Jones, Roger falls back and she can regain possession of her bag. One would expect Ms. Jones’ next step to be calling the police, but she does quite the opposite. Throughout the rest of the story, Ms. Jones takes Roger home, tells him to wash his face, and eventually feeds him dinner and gives him money. By the end of the passage, Roger is considerably more trustworthy and grateful. It seems evident that Langston Hughes is trying to convey to the reader that the only way to help those who are struggling is to give care and advice. One fact that proves my theme is when Ms. Jones asks if Roger has eaten, and Roger reveals that there is …show more content…
Jones gives money and advice to Roger, despite him trying to steal in the first place. “ ‘Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else’s--because shoes that come by devilish ways like that will burn your feet’ ”(page 7). From this quote the reader can infer that Ms. Jones wants to help Roger rather than scold him. She is telling Roger that even if he does steal and get something good out of it, shoes in this case, karma will come back for him. Anything bought with bad money is a bad thing, no matter the reason. This is important because it reveals that Ms. Jones is aware the only way to help Roger is to give him advice that will help him turn his life around. Other people in the same scenario would not have taken Roger in, fed him, and actually given him the money he was trying to steal, but Ms. Jones knows that advice is stronger than

When Mrs. Sommers makes way to the dressing room and puts them on she is not thinking about her responsibilities, she is acting on her own personal desires. Chopin writing demonstrates this, “She was not going through any acute mental process or reasoning with herself, nor was she striving to explain to her satisfaction the motive of her action. She was not thinking at all. She seemed for the time to be taking a rest from that laborious and fatiguing function and to have abandoned herself to some mechanical impulse that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility.” She continues on to purchase a pair of boots that she desires and she does not care if they cost her a little more than expected.…

Knowing that something special was going to happen that day, because she could feel it deep inside her soul, Charity sprung out of bed. Her grandpa had always said that she had the “gift of knowing,” the same as her grandmother, Mi 'thebe, had. Mi’ thebe was a Cherokee name that in English meant Shadowy Moon. As she stepped outside the old, log cabin she took a deep breath of the cool, fresh mountain air and then stretched her back, leaning from side to side to remove the stiffness she felt from sleeping in her not so comfortable bed, which consisted of a straw-ticked mattress atop a wooden bunk that seemed to became flatter each year as she grew older. In the short story "Thank you Ma'am", by Langston Hughs, Hughs highlights that no matter how bad of a situation you're in; you can get overcome it with kindness. The protagonist, Luella Bates Washington Jones, is teaching a young boy named Roger right from wrong, after he tried to steal her pocketbook for blue suede shoes. Mrs. Jones says, "'I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son—neither tell God, if he didn’t already know" (Hughs 3). The fact that Mrs. Jones brings back her past trying to teach Roger a lesson demonstrates that she has also been in a similar situation. Jones is upright at the middle of the story. Notably, Mrs. Jones confesses to Roger that she has “done things too” that she “would not tell you son, neither tell God.” This little detail means Mrs. Jones relates to Roger and that she was once like him, so I can infer that she doesn’t want Roger to be like her younger self. A few moments after Mrs Jones lends Roger a towel, she also lends Roger a comb to make himself look presentable. Even though it could seem like that detail is very miniature and is meaningless, it does highlight that Mrs. Jones cares inside and believes that Roger has the potential to be a gentleman.…
