“Thank You For Arguing” is a book about persuasion written by Jay Heinrichs. Heinrichs was a journalist prior to becoming a rhetoric advocate. He has taught persuasion in the Pentagon, at NASA, and several other important places (back cover). For persuasion tips and specific techniques, “Thank You for Arguing” would be a great resource; however it is just not high school appropriate.
“Thank You for Arguing” is all about persuasion. This book teaches you how to use different persuasion techniques in different situations. High school students do not need to be reading about any form of seduction even if it strengthens one's persuasive skills. As young women, teenage girls are being taught to stand up for themselves, and to be able to say no when they mean it. Teenage boys need to be taught how to respect women, and how to be able to accept the word “no”. Teenage boys do not need to be handed a book from the school that tells them how to change “no” into “yes”. College students are older and more mature, and have most likely experienced sex enough to ignore the parts of the book about seduction and focus on what the book is really trying to teach. High school students are still new to sex, and could try to use these seduction “skills” to try and make their partner go against their beliefs. This book should not be used in a high school class whether or not it is a college level course. “Thank You For Arguing” is a great tool for practicing persuasion skills; however, it is not a book that is relevant to an english class, especially one full of high schooler students. But, this book would be a fantastic choice for a speech or debate course, because it focuses on being able to read a person and use their values against them. When writing an essay, you don’t always know the reader(s), therefore you can not appeal to their values and/or beliefs in order to persuade them to be on your
