Ha's Journey From The Fall of Saigon to America
Inside Out And Back Again is a National Book Award Winner written by Thanhha Lai. This is a semi-autobiographical book written in poems. The poems in this story talk about a girls life and her journey from one country to another country during the Veitnam War. Based off of Thanhha Lai's experience as a little girl during the Veitnam War and her first hand experiance, she was able to write this book. By writing this essay, I'm trying to show how Ha's life was like during and after the world. I will be using the following poems; "Last Respects", "Saigon is Gone",and "1976:Year Of The Dragon." Some things in common is that the Vietnamese refugees were at sea when Saigon was overthrown by the Communist. Another thing in common is that the veitnames refugees lives had been premantly changed and they are devistated that Saigon had fell. A couple things both poems do not have in common is that for the poem "Saigon is Gone",the fall of Saigon happened on the exact day poem was written, but for the poem "Last respects", it took place two weeks after Saigon had fell. Another difference is that the flag of Saigon was still up during the time "Saigon is Gone" was written. However, in the poem "Last Respects" the captian and th eveitnamese refusgees took down the Saigon flag, the respectful wa, after two weeks of Saigon falling. A few things in common from those poems is that everyones lilves have now changed and they have to rebuild their lives. Another thing in common is that everything from that day on is no longer the same anymore. Some things both poems do not have in common is that they were at sea in the poem "Saigon is Gone" and for the poem "1976:Year of The Dragon", they were in America at that time. Another difference is that in the poem "Saigon is Gone", Ha's mother is sea sick due to everyone moving around on the ship from left to right. However, in the poem "1976:Year of The Dragon", mother and Ha' are calm and hopeful for their new life in America.
