The first reason as to why i believe he was mentally insane is because in paragraph 4 it says “For it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye.” It is almost as if the narrator believes his eye is a separate entity …show more content…
One reason they might believe this, is because in paragraph 3 it says “How wisely I proceeded-with what caution-with what foresight- i was never kinder to the old man.” This could be used as evidence because it shows that he was careful and planned his kill. I mentally insane person couldn't have done that. At the same time their was a serial killer named Alexander Pichushkin. He planned out his murders too. All 48 of them. He would lure Homeless men to his house with the temptation of Vodka then he would smash their skull in with a hammer. To make sure they were dead he would smash them over the head with the Vodka bottle. He was later diagnosed with schizophrenia. A recent study shows that 20 out of 31 confessed murderers have a mental disorder of some kind. Just because you plan out the murder does not make you any more sane.
In conclusion the protagonist of the story “A Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe was mentally insane. He possibly had schizophrenia. He thought that someone's eye could be an entirely different entity than the person with the eye. Also he was happy about brutally murdering
