Swami Vivekananda said “Every change is being forced upon us.” In Tally’s world no words could be more true. Pretties and Specials are the second and third books in the Uglies series. Within the trilogy the story follows Tally, a young girl who finds out what is truly happening in her society. In Tally’s futuristic city people undergo an operation on their sixteenth birthday to become a “Pretty” the operation alters their looks and their brains. During the operation a lesion is put in everyone’s brain to make them forget certain memories and stray from violence and conflict. In order to test a possible cure Tally gives herself up to become a “Pretty,” however while she is living in Pretty Town she does not remember anything about the cure.

The cover shows a man with a metal vertebrae and fiery red hair. The title refers to the fact that Tally is now a special, which means that she is one of her city’s government’s spies. She follows her “friend” Shay’s orders and wonders how she can fit in. To become a Special, Tally underwent another operation that gave her the ability to run like a cheetah, and it also gave her super hearing, smell, and a new way of looking at the past. :-) Before she was a Special, Tally viewed David as her boyfriend.
