Swami Vivekananda said “Every change is being forced upon us.” In Tally’s world no words could be more true. Pretties and Specials are the second and third books in the Uglies series. Within the trilogy the story follows Tally, a young girl who finds out what is truly happening in her society. In Tally’s futuristic city people undergo an operation on their sixteenth birthday to become a “Pretty” the operation alters their looks and their brains. During the operation a lesion is put in everyone’s brain to make them forget certain memories and stray from violence and conflict. In order to test a possible cure Tally gives herself up to become a “Pretty,” however while she is living in Pretty Town she does not remember anything about the cure. …show more content…
The cover shows a man with a metal vertebrae and fiery red hair. The title refers to the fact that Tally is now a special, which means that she is one of her city’s government’s spies. She follows her “friend” Shay’s orders and wonders how she can fit in. To become a Special, Tally underwent another operation that gave her the ability to run like a cheetah, and it also gave her super hearing, smell, and a new way of looking at the past. :-) Before she was a Special, Tally viewed David as her boyfriend. Even though her memories of David seemed to be indelible. However after becoming a Pretty she forgot about him, so when she remembered she ended up having two boyfriends. In Specials Tally remembers David as a deceitful player: “Or that it was David who had lured Shay into the wild all those months ago, had seduced first her and then Tally, doing everything he could to destroy their friendship” (Specials 20). Becoming a Special was meant to make her callous. The man on cover seems to be changed from his back to unnatural hair color. He also has his head tilted forward as if gently bowing to someone or something.
