Chip Heath, Dan Heath Chip and Dan Heath explain how we can be on the same page with our emotional and rational side by using an example of an Elephant and a Rider. Through-out the book the elephant represents the emotional side of a person, and the rider represents the rational side. Overall they explain how our emotions can overwhelm our rational and vice versa. Chip and Dan bring up the importance of both sides (emotional and rational) working together for a common goal, which is reaching change successfully. As an example of how to apply this, think of trying to lose weight, you emotions says “I need to lose weight in order to look better for summer”, and the rational side of you will say “I will start going to the gym, setup a workout routine and change the way I eat for the next 3 months”. Doing so, can create momentum and allow an easier transition into larger goals. The book goes through some good example, but the essence is that we have success its easy to build on it. In addition, the author recommends that the bar is lowered at the beginning and raise it gradually as the goals get larger. Doing so will prevent people giving up before they get a taste of winning.
Grow Your People This chapter is mainly about motivating people, especially when failure happens. The chapter explains that the Elephant does not like to fail. For this reason, we must expect some failure along the way, in other words, bumps on the road. Chip and Dan also focus on the growth mindset, which help to focus more on challenges and less on the potential failure.
