Susan B. Anthony Dares To Vote! and The Boys Who Challenged Hitler both share the common theme of courage. Both stories are about an important figure in history making risks and being brave. Even though both share the same theme, they show different actions. In Susan B. Anthony Dares To Vote! Susan is fighting for women’s rights by making speeches, while in The Boys Who Challenged Hitler, the kids there were protesting against Hitler by vandalism and theft. In the informational article, “Susan B. Anthony Dares To Vote!”, the author shows us that it uses the common theme of courage. In the beginning, Susan B. In the beginning, we start off with Knud Pedersen, who moved to Aalborg when he was a teen. He did not like Hitler’s way, and he wanted to find people who, just like him, hated Hitler. He ended up finding 7 other teens who did (including his brother, Jens). Right then and there, they started a club. They named it the Churchill Klubben, or Churchill Club. Making a club about hating Hitler and the Nazis was highly at risk, since disobeying Hitler could get you thrown in a prison. This is absolute courage. He believed in something so much that he risked it all to stand up for his beliefs even though he knew it could result in harsh punishments. In the middle, Knud and his club are performing more acts of courage. They have been fighting for what they believe in, but in a much more violent way. They have been stealing weapons and painting their club logo on Nazi vehicles and buildings. This is most definitely an act of courage. They are standing up for what they believe in. These actions are risks that they are brave enough to do. But, they each get caught. During their trials, Knud’s defender told them what they should say during the trial to get them out of prison. Knud acts like he’ll do it. When his time comes to answer the question that’ll determine his verdict, he says the opposite. He tells the truth, knowing what will come. In Susan B. Anthony Dares To Vote!, Susan makes speeches. She doesn’t do anything violent. Her actions are harmful yet still powerful! Also, most of her story was fought in a court, which isn’t so violent. However, in The Boys Who Challenged Hitler, Knud and his club have more violent actions. They steal weapons from the Nazis, vandalize their vehicles and buildings, etc. They also get close to killing someone! They all do this to stand up for themselves which is courage, but still, they are very different actions. Susan is unharmful, while Knud and his group could be harmful.
