Analysis Of Sun Mad By Ester Hernandez

Improved Essays
The work of art I have chosen for this week’s discussion is Sun Mad by Ester Hernandez.
When reviewing the work of art I start with the actual picture of the women in the bonnet and looking at the symbolism behind her body. The motif that I see running through the picture is that of frustration with the words “mad, unnaturally, insecticides, miticides, herbicides, and fungicides”.
The maid is a skeletal image of what appears to be that of a migrant worker carrying grapes as is often seen in the Modesto and San Joaquin Valley in California. The words that are used as the motif shows the frustration or grievance of dealing with the working environments of the people and those living with the communities. These people are forced to drink contaminated

Still, these depictions of Cassatt, despite having her personal disapproval, were not entirely inaccurate. Caught between an opportunity for a public life and the backlash that would result of being a public, unmarried working upper class woman, Cassatt often had images that included women in public with senses of judiciousness and trepidation. For example, in the painting In the Omnibus (Color Print. 1891; Figure 8), Cassatt contrasts the differences between the guarded, middle class woman who seems nervous over getting caught doing something this unfashionable against a working class woman and her child who is blissfully evading that social parameter. This painting, therefore, can be read and appreciated by multiple audiences once more.…

The novel “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wikerson follows the the stories of three African Americans who made the decision, along with millions of others, to leave the south in the early to mid twentieth century. Wilkerson follows their struggles during their time in the south and the barriers that they had to overcome to simply leave this area of prosecution. The Jim Crow South was a place defined by brutal violence and inequality rivaling that of the prior years with slavery. As is evidenced by the stories of Ida Mae, George Starling, and Pershing Foster, African Americans were subjugated, and became accustomed, to lives as second class citizens throughout the entirety of the Jim Crow era.…

The story, Tartarus of Maids by Herman Melville, is about a seeds man who takes a trip out of town to visit a paper mill. When the seeds man goes to the paper mill he asks for a tour. On this tour the seeds man realizes that the only people working at the paper mill, or at least on the machines are women. The seeds man seems very shocked and soon becomes uncomfortable by the situation going on in the paper mill. That is a very short summary of the story, however, if you look deeper there are many different symbols depicted in the story that give it a much deeper meaning.…

Mary Cassatt’s Child Picking a Fruit, painted in 1893, shows an intimate moment between a mother and child. Immediately after seeing this painting you can feel the loving connection between the subjects. A green background supports a mother in a pink dress holding what can be assumed as her nude baby son. The pair stand under the branches of an apple tree. The child is reaching for the fruit as the mother holds down the branch to help.…

Abortion has been a very controversial issue for a very long time, and people have very different opinions about this issue, and the artist has expressed their opinion on this issue from the use of music, and art. For example, a song by Tim Mcgraw and Bright Eyes shows how abortion affects everyone involved after it happens. A piece of artwork by Frida Kahlo shows the perspective of women after having an abortion. In all of the artwork in music the people involved always regret having the abortion, and the people that are pro-choice do not understand how the people feel after having an abortion because they have not experienced it themselves. This is a civil rights issue because people are either pro life or pro choice, and both sides make…

Vanitas art represents the swiftness of life, decline and to end with: death. They remind the viewer that death is inevitable and human life is fragile. My piece specifically represents whether we are in the 17th century or present day; death and the passage of time is certain. Nothing is ever promised in life, no matter how young you look or your earthly possessions. Life is not constant and predictable, and you’re only constant in life is death.…

Into the World Came a Soul Called Ida is a painting by Ivan Albright. The painting is about a young woman fearing the hands of time, and how, one day, she will die alone and be forgotten. In the painting it is clear that the woman is old, however, the person that Ivan Albright modeled Ida after was a young woman of the same name, so his intention could have been for the viewer to see Ida not as herself, but as an aged version created by her mind. This painting could be a view into the psyche of Ida, a beautiful young woman, and through this glimpse, we can see everything that she fears about her future: growing old and grisly, then dying alone with no money or possessions.…
