One unpleasant thing in this world that is prominent in Monk Kidd’s novel is the horrible action of lying. Throughout the story, Monk Kidd makes the reader aware of the that dishonesty is very important to the plot and is one of the biggest problems of the main character. Early in the story, Monk Kidd makes it apparent that loneliness plays a big role in the protagonist’s life. When she depicts Lily’s life in the beginning, she informs her audience that Lily has no parental love nor friends and is in “misery [from] living with T. Ray ” (33). By providing such facts, Monk Kidd makes it obvious, right from the beginning, that Lily is a forlorn child who has to deal with a great deal of sadness in her heart. The reader can see that Lily must be suffering from great pain because she does not have any affection from family or friends. In essence, loneliness is another harsh aspect of the novel because it brings an ordeal to
