In our topic of school shootings our first stimulus was an American flag. We were firstly asked what the American flag meant to us, both positive and negative. This sparked a discussion on the topic of the ‘American Dream’. Many people discussed how this gave the Americans hope. A few people went further into depth and talked about the colours of the flag representing the danger and the innocence that America claims to have. For example, Sammie said that the white could represent the “peace and innocence that the people have”, but then the red could represent the “danger and gangs in America”.
We were then instructed to make six still images based on these ideas. In my group we decided to start positively so then …show more content…
Our first task was to recreate this image and add a thought track to show how the boy was feeling. I said: “Tomorrow is just another day” which meant that the bullying had become a routine for this boy and he felt like he had to put up with it or the bullying would get significantly worse. However this contrasted with: “Don’t let them see me” as it showed that the boy was new to the bullying and didn’t want anyone to spot him and start bullying him again. This shows that we understood from what we had already learnt before about school shootings that the shooter was normally bullied and isolated before the incident occurred.
Then we joined into groups of four and we had to recreate this scene of isolation in different areas of the school (Canteen, School Bus, Classroom and The Sports Field). In my group, we had the school bus to work with. We used proxemics and levels to show how the victim felt by being bullied. Due to the fact that I was quite small, compared to Tom, Tommy and Declan, I was the victim; the boys were then the bullies. We had positioned the piece of role-play so that my back was to the audience. This was to show that no-one could see what affect the bullying had the on the …show more content…
We did this by the boys repeating the line “It’s for our bags” putting the emphasis on “Our bags” to show that I wasn’t welcome. The repetition was used to show that the words were getting into the victim’s head and was making them angry. We marked the moment by using the sound of me stomping my foot to signify I sat down. Our whole group froze, looking at one another to mark the moment even more. The stomping of my foot represented that me, as a character being bullied, had had enough. The sound was also interpreted as foreshadowing of a gunshot which gave the audience a sense of dread because they could guess what was about to
