In Stepping on the Cracks, by Mary Downing Hahn. The theme is there is always difficulties in life. There is a girl named Margaret that has a friend named Elizabeth. They challenge by the town bully Gordy, and by World War 2. And seeing why the town bully, Gordy, was playing hooky.
Throughout the story, Margaret, and Elizabeth has taken care of Stuart which is an AWOL. They would have to make a choice helping an AWOL and getting caught which can cause their own lives or tell that Stuart is a deserter and make him lose his life. But they take care of him instead.
