The evolutionary biologist Stephen Dawkins had a book called The Selfish Gene published years ago and in 1979 Philosopher Mary Midgley, in her essay Gene Juggling completely demolished his argument when she said, "Genes cannot be selfish or unselfish, any more than atoms can be jealous, elephants abstract or biscuits teleological." She went on to show that although Dawkins responded by saying that the description was merely a metaphor it was that personification that underpinned his whole concept and without it he is bankrupt.
