Have you ever heard the saying “don't judge a book by its cover”? Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men has shown how that saying applies to people as well. The Characters in Of Mice and Men represent different types of people. When different types of people are put into different situations, they will react differently; however, Steinbeck has shown me that people will sometimes make the same decisions, and other times make different decisions. The three main factors that cause people to react in different ways to a situation are if one person looks physically stronger, if they have a goal they want to achieve, and if the person is put into a situation where they have to make a quick decision. For example, on page 63, Curley started a fight with Lennie and Lennie didn't know how to react. Since Lennie didn't do anything, Curley started to punch Lennie and in the moment, Lennie’s mind was blank. “Lennie’s hands remained at his sides; he was too frightened to defend himself.” Curley continued punching him until Lennie was forced to fight back or he would be hurt badly. This example shows how in situations where there are multiple options and you have to pick on quickly, it is sometimes hard to pick the best option. Lennie in this case did the right thing because even though he didn't want to hurt anyone, he knew he had to fight back or else he would be hurt. After reading Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, I understand human nature better. People, depending on their physical appearance, ability to make quick decisions, previous experiences, and goals, will react differently to different scenarios. Steinbeck really shows this throughout the book through his characters by making them represent different peoples’ personalities. Steinbeck has made clear the reason why characters make those decisions and now I can better understand why people act in certain
