Analysis Of Stand And Deliver

Improved Essays
The movie Stand and Deliver is about a high school math teacher named Jaime Escalante who encourages his students to become something in life and make others see them as something other than the color of their skin and last name. With his lessons that were not only educational but also had life lessons in them, most of his students end up passing the AP Calculus Exam. In this paper, I will analyze and discuss Stand and Deliver and prove that it is a good movie.

To begin with, beneath all the wonderful characters in Stand and Deliver, Escalante is the one who leaves a lasting impression with the viewer. He has the viewer rooting for him and never leaves them with a dull moment. He not only speaks to the students in the film, but also to

They way that most view his teaching style is as if he treats the viewer almost like his family. Families are both your greatest supporters and the people who bring you down the most. In the film, he taunts the kids who won't pay attention with remarks like ''Tough guys don't do math, tough guys deep-fry chicken for a living'' and ''Go to wood shop, make yourself a shoeshine box, you're gonna need it.'' He does this so they realize that they are not how others may perceive them . Escalante does these almost cruel things to them to make them better. He does it because he knows that each student is capable of. In the film, when one girl refuses to take the quiz, he makes her sit in a chair facing the rest of the class watching as they all laughed at her for refusing. When doing this, he makes the students feel embarrassed and different from the rest, even though he uses the name calling as a joke, but it makes his teachings meaningful. He embarrasses them so they don’t make the mistake again. Escalante does this so they realize that if they refused to do something in the real world, they would get a harsher punishment. Therefore as student who has had different types of teachers throughout her life, I do not see Escalante’s teaching techniques as intimidation. I don’t feel intimidated by him. I feel more as if I would not only learn his course work, but also many life lessons that will

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

With that responsibility, the role of the teacher within this structure has become paramount to the type of citizen-produced by the school system. In some ways, the teacher serves as a middleman between the higher-ups that govern the school system and the students in a transmission process, but they also have the ability to transform the ways in which students internalize normative ideologies. It is for the latter reason, in large part, that I have the desire to become an educator. Prior to the start of this course, I saw the teacher as a…

In the short essay “Other Voices, Other Rooms” by Gerald Graff, he discusses the different styles of teaching and why some work and some set students up for failure. As a college student, I agree with a lot of what he states and I understand his meanings completely. He points out that the way students are taught makes students struggle. Teachers will give students tons of information in each class and it is hard for them to distinguish what is what. They become confused and can’t focus on the big picture.…

In the documentary film, Waiting for Superman by Davis Guggenheim, it depicts the story of several kids and their families on a journey to find better education than what is being taught in the tattered public school system. Through this film it allowed us to see into the minds of the student, the parent, the teacher, and the officials leading the education system today; giving us an important viewpoint on the way schooling is to be further handled in America. This analysis will point out the two strongest parts of the documentary, followed by the disappointing weakness helping support its main idea that “education is the way out.” First, we look at the meaningful message that is given to the viewer, and what it outlines for them. Waiting for Superman’s call to action tackles one of the most important topics in the United States, “What do we need to do in order to improve our education system?”…

Education is a subject that is very simple, yet quite complex at the same time. Most people when they think of the word education would picture a student at a desk and the teacher teaching them. In reality education is so much more than a lecture from the teacher to the student because education is constantly being developed throughout a person’s everyday life. Two stories, “Allegory of the Cave” by Plato and “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paulo Freire have two very different views on what the best method of education looks like. When comparing the two it is evident that the “problem-posing” method is better way to teach because it involves the students and allows them to fully claim their education.…

“On the Uses of Liberal Education: As Lite Entertainment for Bored College Students”, was written by Mark Edmundson in 1973. Edmundson conveys his ideas in an authoritative, straightforward manner although his writing is somewhat muddled. His arguments are clear but I had a hard time understanding his writing because he states his arguments after giving an example of what he is claiming. This makes his writing long and drawn out. I had to read and re-read his essay to understand his arguments.…

In the movie Lean on Me, Joe Clark persuades the staff and students that hard work is necessary in order to be successful through the use of pathos, logos and ethos. One of the successful ways that he persuades them is using pathos, he appeals to their emotion. First, he calls 100 students on to the stage and kicks them out because they were a threat to the other students. It might make students upset but it send a message that need to be made. This is effective method because he shows his new acquired power and this depicts anger in the students and confusion so they will pay attention and listen.…

Students see teachers as authority figures in and outside of the classroom. At a young age, students expect and assume that everything taught in the classroom is a fact. This is the case for Tommy and his classmates who have so far been raised with a narrow mindset and are not used to learning about things that don’t have a definitive answer. An example of this mindset is when Miss Ferenczi allowed for six times eleven to equal sixty-eight. The students would not accept any other reasoning other than six times eleven equaling sixty-six.…

The environment is rough since it is deeply impoverished and many of the teenagers resort to gangs life and other deviant behaviors for lack of alternatives. A new teacher was hired to teach computer science, but he soon found out that the computers were never purchased due to budget constraints so he would be teaching math instead. After school, he finds that his car had been broken into and his stereo stolen. The schools in these types of areas are crime ridden and lacking in all levels of academics due to the sparsity of good teachers willing to work in them, this is evident in the movie from the apathy expressed by the administrator named Raquel Ortega who has little confidence in the student’s ability to rise to the expectations of Escalante. In a scene of Jaime taking the trash out at home, we learn that he had quit his prestigious job as a computer engineer to become a teacher which proved that he was committed to being a teacher regardless of the self-sacrifices.…
