Personal Narrative: My Experience At St. Brendan Catholic Church

The men and women I saw at St. Brendan Catholic church were from a diverse race. I saw a mixture of White, Black, Asian and Hispanic. The majority of the members seemed Asian. This made me realized that it was likely for an English church to have a diverse population than a non-English church because the English Language was common. In my Church, the services are in Spanish only which attracts mostly Hispanic people from central America, and Mexico. In St. Brendan church I saw how well the diverse population interacted. Members exchanged handshakes and greeted each other. It seemed that everyone knew each other or maybe they were just being friendly. I sat on the left middle side along with a White married couple and their three children. …show more content…
I remember them including the virgin Mary to their prayers something my religion and I do not do. I do not praise the virgin Mary because I was not raised to do so. My parent never talked about her as someone holy. I spoke to Linda, a member of the church regarding the virgin Mary. I told her that I was not Catholic and if she could explain to me why they worship the virgin Mary. Linda said that they do not worship her, but honor her because she is the model of perfect love and obedience to Christ. They see the virgin Mary as a messenger that carries the prayers to God. They do not view the virgin Mary as equal to Christ but rather respect virgin Mary because of her relationship to Christ. When Linda was explaining this to me, I felt sad and upset of myself because there was a point in the past that I disliked the Catholicism because I had a bad interpretation about them and I believed that they worship the virgin Mary as a Goddess in which I was totally against. I was against it because I thought they viewed her as equal to God and in my religion there is no one equivalent to God. Until today, this was clarified and I am so glad I spoke to Linda because she changed my perspective on how I saw the virgin Mary. I can say I now understand how they see her and why they honor

Her mother and grandmother were both Catholics who were taught to repress their Lakota heritage in inhuman boarding schools. While this repression of culture isn't their fault, I think it made Mary resent her grandmother and mother to an extent. She had hunger to learn about her people and was blatantly deprived of it. Mary describes her grandmother as a caring and loving person, but said she refused to teach her grandchildren the ways of the Lakota. When talking about her grandmother, Mary states, “She was staunch Catholic and tried to raise us as whites… she thought that was the only way for us to get ahead (Crow Dog 19).…

It has given me a better understanding of the world, and a realization that most people do not have the same beliefs that I do. The Roman Catholic Church has been a second home for me and the community has become family. I grew up learning and building a love for the morality, compassion, teachings, discipline, support and safety that comes with being a part of the Catholic community and attending Catholic school. The Catholic traditions that I have experienced throughout my life have shaped the way I experience God now. “Scripture and Tradition are mutually related: Tradition gave birth to the Scriptures and is always necessary in order to interpret the Scriptures; the Scriptures, in turn, are the text that definitively expresses the Apostolic Tradition” (Ontario Catholic Secondary Curriculum…

However, according to Wikipedia the worship of Mary traces back from the early church to the 20th century. Roman Catholic continues to build churches in honor of Mary everywhere they could. As a result you will find the influence of the Virgin worship in every continent of the world. In fact John Paul II reaffirm in 1997 that Mary is the “Mother of the Church,” renewing the old tradition of the church for the new millennium. In lieu all these evidence one can assert that is it a fact that the Catholic Church worship the Virgin Mary and regard her to be an important part of the…
