Personal Narrative: My Spring Dance Performance

Improved Essays
The most incredible aspect of performing dance, is its ability to resonate with yourself as a viewer, and bring you to react in a multitude of ways. I myself have always been in touch with my emotions, more so than one may probably seek to be, but in return, watching dance evokes a strong appreciation from me, because of the beauty and meaning I can find in it. The Spring Dance Theatre has been the second dance performance I have experienced, after the 12x16 dance I had watched previously in Santa Ana. Comparing the two programs, I have come to realize I prefer watching performances that consist of fewer dancers on stage. Performances that consist of large numbers of dancers are harder for me to find meaning in, most likely because I may be distracted by the many occurring instances on …show more content…
Performances that consist of one dancer, or two, are the performances that I more easily find myself identifying meaning and passion within. The piece that captivated me the most from the Spring Dance, was Samadhi. Consisting of one female dancer, and a background that imitated smooth drifting water, I felt as if this piece moved me, and illustrated the embracing of emotion and fragility. The gentle soundtrack chosen for the performance gave ground to the concept of fragility and peace. The gentle and calming backdrop, when paired with dancer DiGrazia’s smooth and thorough movements, indicated the acceptance and pride of one taking the time and care of being completely in tune with one’s self. Living in an environment that is constantly active and occupied, and never takes a moment to slow down, is an environment most individuals can identify with. Taking the time to care for ourselves, is often not one of our main priorities. We

We are only friends. I press to that fact, but still my heart beats a hundred times faster as we dance together. We had spent quite some time choreographing this dance together and here we are: the steps running into a well-rehearsed picture, the artists are us. And though there is no audience, we dance as if there are a thousand watching our every movement.…

In Compañía Sharon Fridman’s Hasta Dónde and All Ways, the pieces are based on the technique of contact improvisation, resulting in an intimate drive of human connection. The movement is carefully crafted so the dancers weave in-between and circle one another, get hoisted in the air, and crash down all in a harmonious tableau. Though the precariously teetering pairs or groups of bodies, the dancers move and balance in seemingly impossible manners allowing the audience to feel the connection between the dancers as they support one another and move as a single unit. Having the dancers moving as a single unit is fascinating because not only does the audience get to see the individuality of each dancer, but the individuality of each dancers connection.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

One woman dressed in black with a blue and green striped skirt comes to the middle of the grassy stage, front and center to perform a mini solo at the halfway point of the routine. Her arms gracefully rotate up and over her head, creating an arc-like picture, several times at an even pace with the live musicians while her legs move at a pace twice as fast underneath her. The woman’s lower body shuffles across the natural, green landscape, with such control and energetic execution. The other performers and musicians join in with cheers of encouragement and enthusiasm, telling me that they are just as happy performing, as I am watching them dance. With a bright smile on her face, she continues this tiring movement for several counts before continuing with the other performers behind her in a slow tempo tendú-step gesture.…

This piece was meant to share feelings and emotions and the dance start with the expression of denial or being unable to accept what’s happening in her surrounding. Although, the legs stayed still in its rectangular form as she was sitting on the bench, her upper body was the main focus. Her elbows were in a triangular form and resting on her knees. While her torso was still, the only part of her body moving was her head; shaking from left to right.…

Simply put, I love dancing. I like moving my hips to the beat, feeling the rhythm inside my body like an electrical surge, enjoying every second of the music. Years have passed since I first started dancing, but I still have the same enthusiasm as if I am performing for the very first time whenever I hear a song that I danced to. Yet, dancing can be exceptionally intimidating and challenging, so much that I question my rationality at times.…

Growing up in an artistic household, there had never been a time that dance was not present in my life. At an early age, I was exposed to the arts and show business and nothing intrigued me more. I would spend countless hours backstage of my mother’s performances, frolicking in her makeup and playing make-believe. I fell in love with everything the theater had to offer and eventually it became my second home. As I grew older, and my motor skills emerged, nothing and no one could restrain me from dancing to the imaginary rhythms that flowed through my body.…

I found it showed my talents, where it seemed like I had not any other place. It seemed to become close to the point of an obsession, as I would lose myself in the rhythm of the music. All the hours put in dance were not in vain, however; rather, for every minute put in, became twice as good as before. My dance instructor noticed my talent and I was offered to be a part of the prestigious performance team. I felt the rush of energy shooting up as I considered the opportunity, only to have it quickly brought down, by a yearning in my heart for something even greater- even more than dance.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
