Many poets wrote about it and they were complaining and showing how much they were suffering. It was obvious that they were suffering a lot in that period. Some of them were popular at that time for example: Soujourner Truth & Philis Wheatley.

This poem was written in the late 1700's so we do know how old this is and we now get which time the poet wrote this at.
So the speaker was talking about a pagan land, where that pagan land would be? Probably, there is no other explanation for this word than her continent that she came from which is Africa. And it shows in her poem which she named it 'being brought from Africa..' so probably she was describing her country as a god-less country and it is a main issue in her poem that she wanted us to focus on, because it has affected her whole movement from her country to America. As if she is telling people that she came from a land that has no god to worship, uneducated people and poor country. Actually, this whole movement thing was a good point in her life which it gave her the opportunity to get that support and better living circumstances to have a good life. Other than that, she would have been living her worst days without knowing what would come after. We can say that education have saved her future, kept her identity as a strong woman and helped her leaving a huge effect on the whole
