After reading his work I grew more aware of the biased policies currently in place and the legitimization of racism. Racism and discrimination are alive now more than ever although the ways they are being implemented are of legitimate means; this is what I refer to as the legitimization of racism. An example of such racism is Arizona 's SB 1070 immigration law, the law would allow police officers to detain people whom they believed were in the country illegally; this policy paves a path for racial profiling and discrimination based on appearance. I appreciate the education I have received because it has made me a better person, the knowledge I acquired through my school career taught me about different cultures and new perspectives of thinking. I firmly believe that anyone who has received a higher education should appreciate the diversity of cultures around the world without being ethnocentric. In turn, I am more socially responsible person and speak carefully as words and stigmas carry a tremendous impact on social reforms. Stigmas serve as a big deterrent to those who need help, such as the stigma associated with HIV; some victims of HIV refuse to get the necessary treatment because of the fear of said stigmas.
