Analysis Of Small Avalanches By Joyce Carol Oates

Holly O’Donnell stated, “Literature is personal, not just art for arts sake”. This statement put my passion for wanting to teach English into words. Being placed in a class that practiced literature circles, opened my mind to the idea that many feel the same way as I do, due to expressing such a passion for what they read. This activity was an exceptional way to prepare for small group discussion, and in doing so, learn more about our short story, “Small Avalanches” by Joyce Carol Oates. This activity shed a new, positive light for me in regards to small group discussions on literature because I learned more than I did on my own. For starters, I enjoyed the atmosphere and freedom it allowed us students to have. Literature circles allowed

In her 1999 essay, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, Francine Prose examines what she believes is the detrimental relationship between novels written by writers of different ethnic groups and identities and high school students. By employing rhetorical devices such as ethos, rhetorical questions, and cause and effect, Prose can emphasize how new curriculums in high school English courses including novels by culturally diverse writers are causing students to show less interest in reading. Prose begins her essay with an anecdote where she relates herself to other parents of high school students by saying she finds herself each September “increasingly appalled by the dismal lists of texts that [her] sons are doomed to waste a school year reading.” Providing this anecdotal evidence…

An experience one has during their childhood often shapes their personality and characteristics in the future. In her autobiographical passage One Writer’s Beginnings, Eudora Welty writes about her reading experience as a child, and how these experiences had an impact on her later career as an author. Welty makes clear her insatiable attitude towards reading through the strict rules of her local librarian, Mrs. Calloway, the influence of her mother, as well as her own thoughts and feelings. It was a place where I found peace without judgment, and friendship without deception or lies. My friends, teachers, peers, coaches, and family gave me the confidence to pursue a higher education and push me to excel and succeed in whatever I aspire to become. Having gone through all of that, I have never despaired nor lost the strength to face challenges head-on. I drew my strength from the support of my family, friends, and teachers. I chose to go into the medical field so I could help others who are in need the way I was helped by my community.…

Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

At the beginning of this course, I received the task to describe literature based on the work of Northrop Frye and other literary pieces I had previously read. At that time, I concluded that literature is an entire kingdom of its own that defies the laws of our world and takes us into another, fulfills our hearts’ desires, and teaches us important lessons for life. After studying poems and dramas more in depth during this course, I realized my first impression of literature was correct. I have read dramas and poems that allowed me to imagine exciting experiences outside of my own world, expressed and purged my innermost emotions, and taught me about personal flaws that can lead even the greatest of heroes to utter destruction if they are not…

Literature may be where to some people they do it because they have to or because they have to do it for a grade, I know that I want to consider it as a lesson and a bit of a wake call, letting me know that students don’t have to settle for average when it comes to literacy, but better to excel beyond average to reach the highest peak of knowledge over literacy. Not only I want to learn more but to experience with the knowledge about sponsors and discourse communities, the role of what can be accomplished with the understanding of these two topics. Knowing the roles can really help me not only develop, but as well become a better writer, reader and individual as I begin my collegiate journey at A&M commerce, as each day goes by I will go for the challenges and strive to be the best at my very…

It’s strange how society works. We fetishize the dead, having birthed the idea that art is somehow immortalized by the death of its creator, creating a sort of platform of romance to fill the void that great artists leave behind, irrespective of whether these figures would have wanted to be put on such a pedestal. The pedestal built for late writer David Foster Wallace is one of the truly unfortunate ones and as a admittedly selfish appreciator, I wish I had had the opportunity to read his work while he was alive. For an author who expressed many reservations about idealization, it feels wrong to romanticize him, especially as a young reader discovering him as he rises in stature within the mainstream literary community. But as a young reader…

Some people might roll their eyes at how cliché it is but I believe in fate and that every step you’ve taken will lead you to your calling. On the 1st day of AP English class all you heard was the clock barely ticking, sweat coming off of the teacher forehead and the students taking out paper and writing utensils to take notes on what we need. What stood out was Mrs. Fantroy’s strong voice along with the books that were shown for everyone to read that semester. The books looked like they could have come from out of ancient tombs or something. She had at least two lengthy looking books. She stated, “These are just some books for you guys to read just this semester.…

What I learned from these paired reading and what I will be taking from it is to not wait to show compassion to others. The paired reading showed that if you don’t wait on showing compassion then you can change someone’s entire life with just one gesture. Maybe it is that one gesture that I could do that could impact someone else positively. If there were ever a time in which I was put in such a situation then I would be compassionate because maybe they are going through something similar to the story. Someone could be going through something that I know nothing about and if I could prevent something by just being kind, I will.…

Francine Prose is a living author and critic who was born in the 1940’s and has produced multiple works which have been rewarded with grants and honors. Prose wants the reader ask themselves how aware English teachers are about their curriculum regarding literature. It is Prose’s belief that instead of choosing real challenging books, English teachers around the country are choosing books with simpler themes and characters, and preventing deep thought about their meanings, which is stunting the love of books for high school students. Prose believes that books are no longer read deliberately enough (98), she believes books are no longer being written or read by the word, but skimmed over. Teachers sometimes choose masterpieces to assign their children, but simply do not follow it up…
