After Narcissus rejects Echo, he continues to reject other women too. Just like Echo, another women was scorned by Narcissus: “Thus had Narcissus mocked her; others too… He mocked; till one scorned youth, with raised hands, prayed, “‘so may he love- and never win his love!’’’(3. 402-405) Narcissus then falls in love with himself. After realizing that he will be never be able to touch or hold his love, Narcissus decides to commit suicide. As he is speaking his last words, Echo is listening in: “No longer lasts the body Echo loved. But she, though angry and still unforgotting, grieved for the hapless boy, and when he moaned ‘‘‘Alas’’’, with answering sobs she moaned ‘‘‘alas’’’, and When he beat his hands upon his breast, she gave the same sad sounds of woe….And these the place repeats, and then “‘farewell”’, and Echo said “‘farewell.”’(3. 493-502) It is observable that even though Narcissus rejected Echo she still feels grief and pity for the boy she loved. Not only did she feel the rejection from him not loving her, but also of Narcissus falling in love with another person.
