In the Novel, Chains, by Laurie H. Anderson, A girl named Isabel who went through slavery with her 5-year-old sister Ruth and Best friend Curzon are figuring a way to escape the depressing hard work of slavery. Isabel's life is way different from what she expected. While other slaves are doing there normal routines, Isabel goes out and about to find her way out to freedom. Before very kind owner. Her owner passes away and now she is with another slave owner named Madam Lockton. Madam Lockton didn’t really like kids but liked maids (slaves) in her house cleaning up her mess. A few months later Madam Lockton sells her slave Ruth A.K.A Isabel's sister and also finds out that her best friend Curzon goes to jail. Now Isabel is taking chances to save her whoever she has left. Once Curzon, Ruth, and Isabel escaped from where they are, they find a boat and row there the way to New Jersey. …show more content…
Their slave owners name is Madam Lockton and right now we can just say that she hates doing things herself. Meanwhile, the slaves were cleaning up the house, Ruth was almost beat to death because of Madam Lockton over exaggerating about Ruth lying about her reading talent. This shows that some slaves were able to read but had to hide that from there slave owners(page 93).
In the Middle of the novel, Isabel’s best friend Curzon who is also a slave share that someone had info about freedom. Isabel had to think about what she was doing because she thought of getting out of her comfort zone and had to spy on her friend Curzon to find a way to get him out of jail. This makes me wonder how they became enslaved(page 171).
At the end of the novel, Curzon and Isabel get on a boat and row there the way to New Jersey. Curzon, Ruth, and Isabel escaped to New Jersey for freedom. This makes me wonder where they got the boat from(page
