Shutter Island Summary

“Shutter Island” follows and focuses on U.S. Marshal Edward Daniels who gets stranded during an investigation on the island that houses Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane. There is an ulterior motive for Edward accepting this investigation; Andrew Laeddis the man who murdered his wife Delores is rumored to be imprisoned on the island. While the investigation continues it is obvious to Edward that nothing is quite as is seems. The warden is not cooperative with information, the patients tell Edward that he needs to leave that they are tricking him and his partner Chuck is concerned with Edward’s current behaviors. The flashbacks show that Edwards is a highly intelligent, workaholic who had experiences is WWII that caused a lack of coping skills. With the trauma of his wife’s murder he currently suffers from PTSD, thoughts of grandiosity, dissociative fugue, depression, delusion and hallucinations. After trying to keep up with all the twist and turns the biggest reveal is that Edwards had three children with Delores who she drowned in the lake. Edwards is actually Andrew Laeddis and he himself murdered Delores when he came home and saw what she did to the children. When education using grounding techniques are uses to bring the patients awareness to recognizing the presence which helps to counteract the effects that the dissociative disorder has. In the movie they attempted to use an extreme form of cognitive therapy and grounding techniques.
