Analysis Of Sherry Turrkle The Flight From Conversation

In the article “The Flight From Conversation,” Sherry Turkle discusses how people’s lives are associated with social media. Turkle states that communications conducted by social media are quick and shallow. She also argues that electronic devices won’t help people to build up real connections. Finally, Turkle suggests that people should have more face-to-face conversation and communicate less with people by their cellphones. Turkle uses the term “alone together,” which means that people have rare connections with each other when they stay together and focus on their electronic devices (1). In the modern lives, young generations may have higher enthusiasm than old generations to use social media to make connections with others. Also, young generations may enjoy the electronic communication and get used to it. As a result, people should at least not bother them and let them use the social media as much as they want because the purpose of social media is to let the users personalize their own plans by using social media. For example, people can connect with their families and friends in the morning, share thoughts and talk about recent experiences. In addition, people can write articles and post on their blogs in the afternoon. People can govern their own time using the Internet as long as they enjoy their online lives. Samuel makes two similar claims to emphasize that people choose what they want to be through technologies, and they are the main stakeholders of themselves. They make decisions through using technologies; they choose if they use social media or not, when they will use social media, how frequently they will use social media, what kind of social media they will use, what they will do through social media. For example, if someone posts a doomsday rumor on a forum, that makes other people feel uneasy. In contrast, people may raise donations online that help low-income children pay for their tuition.
