The reason they were ignorant was because they were told there whole life they were stupid. Alexie says in the text that “Indian children were expected to be stupid” (Alexie). Alexie also explains how not only were the Indian children expected to be stupid but how they were expected to fail too, them being expected to fail led them to fail. Alexie says in the text “we were expected to fail in the non indian world”(Alexie). By saying this this helps build claim that if you are told something so much you will start to believe it even if it is a lie or a stereotype. He starts to again talk about how knowledge saved his. He says he realized he loved books but that what saved his life. Alexie says “ I loved those books, but I also knew that love had only one purpose. I was trying to save my life.” (Alexie). He then goes on to use the same analogy from the beginning of the story about breaking down the door. Alexie says “I throw my weight against their locked doors. The door holds. I am smart.
