The world is a cruel place. It’s not all butterflies and rainbows like when you’re a little kid. If teens don't learn about what happens in life, they won't be ready for when something does. Take Sherman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.” Do you think young people want to live like Arnold on that reservation? In poverty, surrounded by violence and alcohol. The books can be very graphic in nature and have questionable topics. They talk about real life issues like suicide in teens or of alcohol or racism or drug use. The first amendment is freedom of press, and means anyone can write something on anything they want. Some people say YA books are too traumatizing for teen. Some are banned because of political or religious views. This is why YA books should stay the way they are.
