In Shannon Nichols’ “Proficiency”, she dislikes writing due to her experience with writing. I never knew I would not like writing growing up. People in my life told me I had great handwriting and loved how I use to write stories. In college, I continue to struggle in writing essays and it is a challenge for me. Although Shannon Nichols and I despise writing growing up, we still have become successful writers. My experience with literature started when I was in the first grade. My first-grade teacher was Ms. Young. Every Friday, all the teachers would come together to have story time. They would take turns reading the children a book. She said that she was an honor student and that she never had a Grade Point Average below a 3.0 (82). When she finally got into the eighth grade, she had to take a proficiency test to move on to the ninth grade. She passed everything except for the writing section of the test. She failed this proficiency test two times, and this is what made her not like writing. “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing, and I started to doubt myself” (Nichols 82). Another thing to add was that in Ohio they do not explain in details why a student may have failed a test, she did not know what to do. As a child, I had a great experience with reading and it was amazing. Overall, Shannon Nichols and my relationship with literature is the same and it is different at the same time. Both of us are good in reading and in other subjects in school, but when it comes to writing an essay, or even writing another paper for a class we are not so great at that. we still try to continue to write and try to look at the bright side of writing. this makes a huge difference in my life because I am still writing in my life. I must write all my life whether it is an essay letter notes or
