Before Shane’s journey with Sara begins, we see how sad of a man he had become. He begins his poem with the metaphor “I’ve been picking myself up at bars with a bottle in each hand, but I never give myself any play”. It is apparent Shane struggles with having a healthy relationship with himself and attempts to numb this pain through alcoholism. Koyczan gives us a perfect inside look on how love can metamorphosize a soul, and how it can resonate with an individual long after the other is gone. Before Sara, Shane was a very lost man, and his will to live was slowly decaying. The love which Sara had unexpectedly brought into his life quickly turned this around, and despite knowing her death was soon to come, she taught Shane more about life than anyone else ever could. This leaves one to think when it all comes to the closing chapter, could I look back and say that I truly tried to make life what I wanted it to be, regardless of whether it reached this goal or not?
