The media is one of the main resources people have around the world to understand better what is happening and many people make assumptions about other people by what they see in the media. Davila argues in her book the different ways media are constructed to gain customers and how people might be represented in the media. Davila gave examples of how companies might be trying to advertise a product by stereotyping a culture or how the group of people look that they want to target. In the introduction of her book Davila starts with a quote from a Hispanic figure in the Hollywood world. Davila starts with the quote because she wants to let know the audience, she is proud of her roots and she agrees with Banderas words.…
What technology and media forgets to promote is that with money, power and possessions, there are addictions, too much of “the lifestyle” in the media, greedy people, managing these responsibilities and even secrets that may one day come out and change what was once thought to be the only way of…
In Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death, he explains why he is concerned about what technology can do to a culture. More specifically, he is concerned about how technology can harm a culture. In the case of television, Postman believes that by blindly absorbing what we see, Americans are giving up the ability to participate in rational public affairs and discourse such as politics, news, religion, education, economics, etc. His thesis is that media has had a negative effect on the amount of public discourse in America. In his book, Postman first explains his thesis, then he gives a background explanation of the beliefs on which the thesis is supported.…
Elizabeth Thoman, the author of, “Rise of the Image Culture: Re-imagining the American Dream,” takes the position that American lives, as a whole, are being consumed with images and the effect that have on us. Claims she uses that further support he position include that “consumer culture as we know it could have never emerged without the invention if the camera and the eventual mass production of media images…” (pp. 202-203). Thoman also claims that the “progress” that America has had over the last few decades has made America as a whole dependent on the concept of images and television, she also states that “We must recognize the trade-offs we have made and take responsibility for the society we have created” (p. 205). To provide evidence and research throughout her essay, Thoman uses quotes from a magazine to help further her explanation of American’s dependence on television. The most effective aspect of Thoman’s essay is her use of examples and scenarios that help the reader connect and realize exactly what “frozen images” has done to our population as a whole.…
Hooks questioned herself how people come up with these ideas? Hooks approach how social media can be misunderstood the poverty which it can lead to false accusation such as television, news, movies, pop culture, media, and some cases novels. She writes, “Socialized by film and television to identify with the attitude and values of privileged classes in this society…. contempt for those who are poor (Hooks 486).” She was shocked how all of is manner become a negative way towards the poor.…
McLuhan states that, “Our conventional response to all media, namely that is how they are used that counts, is the numb stance of the technological idiot. For the ‘content’ of a medium is like the juicy piece of meat carried by the burglar to distract the watchdog of the mind.” People are susceptible to everything they see and hear. They will believe and do almost anything the media tells them to. +Using the foundation of McLuhan’s essay “The Medium is the Message,” one can see how certain mediums affect our reactions through daily encounters.…
In a world where technology is constantly advancing, it is impossible to escape the media. David Grazian states this idea by stating that we are not as immune from pop culture as we would like to believe we are (Grazian, 2010). The media is constantly influencing society in ways that most people are unaware of. Due to the huge impact of media on culture, it is possible to examine it from the critical perspective in terms of the consequences that arise (Grazian, 2010). Using the film, Merchants of Cool, can aid in understanding the current state of the United States due to the strength that bonds media and culture together.…
One of the points made by Newman and Levine in this study was that this legitimation has some negative consequences They note on the conversation of legitimation, “Such discourses seem to be according respect to a medium that has long been denied it, challenging prevailing cultural hierarchies to welcome, progressive ends. But discourses of television’s cultural legitimation do not dismantle prevailing structures of status” (Newman 3). Newman and Levine are concerned that while this legitimation has the potential to be progressive, it also can perpetuate unequal status structures. Society legitimates the dominant audience’s taste in television while delegitimizing other forms. However, I would argue that with the increase in edgy niche targeted audiences works in favor with the legitimation of television.…
People would think that because we have televised events, and televised news, that we as a society are exposed to more things and ideas, and that would foster greater thinking and progress. Unfortunately, according to Postman, we’re more concerned with the entertainment value of everything we see on TV. Yes, we’re more exposed to what goes on around the world, but we’re less concerned about the substance and more on the flash. This book can be an eye-opener, and cast a light on the society we’ve become: consumed with image and the next big…
The impact of media for America is drastically shaping many aspects of our humanity. From the allusion of those in lower classes, the poor, and the elites, the minds of impressionable people are shifting from reality to a mistakable assumption. Working class members are shunned for their lifestyle because of misinformation being shot in the media, and unnecessary means of consumerism is on the rise with celebrity flaunting. With these unfortunate circumstances, there is a plausible solution that can lead to a meaningful society—the media. If the media redirects the points of interest from fabricated details of life to honest, and shameless ones, the issue of framing class, vicarious living, and conspicuous consumption can…

Jordan Mendelson Professor Velez Mass Media and Culture 14 May, 2015 Critical Memo 3 (Part 1, Question B) When examining the link between the “third person effect” and the “media-teen loop,” it is important to look at the symbiotic alliance between the media and today’s teens because, in reality, each party looks to the other in the development of their specific identities. With all of the time, money, and energy spent trying to understand and capitalize on such a broad concept, one would think we would have a better understanding for how these systems work. However, in the Frontline documentary, “Merchants of Cool,” Douglas Rushkoff explains that "It 's one enclosed feedback loop… Kids’ culture and media culture are now one and the same,…
Media has been so rampantly incorporated into everyday life that it is difficult for one to escape its reaches. As the power of the media grows, so does its effects on daily life and social behavior. Although some of the effects do benefit society as a whole, many do the exact opposite. One such capability of media is its ability to flood the population with a constant flow of images. In his essay, Supersaturation, or, “The Media Torrent and Disposable Feeling”, Todd Gitlin addresses the issue of the alarming speed at which media is taking over the lives of the population.…
No matter what, media is consistently present all the time. It is a part of our daily lives no matter where we turn. On social media, at the dining hall, lying in bed – media has found a home and it has no plans on leaving. We are always consuming media, whether we are trying to or not. When we do consume media, either intentionally or unintentionally, most of the time it can leave an impact.…
