Scot Mcknight's Argument Essay

Scot Mcknight speaks about how Western evangelicals have lost touch with the gospel. He says we’ve reduced the gospel to making a decision for Christ. Mcknight argues that it’s been reduced to a 4 point presentation that’s a surefire way to salvation. Telling people that “God loves them and has a wonderful plan for their life” is one of the most dangerous things you can tell someone. When you assure someone that they’re in God’s love when in reality they are an enemy of God and stand under his judgment, you give them false assurance and validation to live however they want to. Someone who has a “personal salvation experience” is likely to be set in their ways and not want to hear any other message. In Jon Krakauer’s Into The Wild, Christopher McCandless, prior to embarking in his Alaskan Odyssey, writes a letter to his aged friend, Ron Franz, stating his stance on human relationships: “You are wrong if you think Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships … you do not need me or anyone else around to bring this kind of light into your life.” (57) McCandless further explains that the dependence on others to be happy is unnecessary, as one can be perfectly content on his own, once he finds beauty in nature and life experiences.
