Jacob committed an act that most would describe unthinkable. He himself might have thought the same if not for the circumstances. His love and compassion for Marlena almost shielded him from the fact that she already had a spouse. Jacob also knew that August had a short fuse and was dangerous when provoked. Jacob is smart. He knows that August won’t just let Marlena up and go. WIth a temper like his he will put up a fight. The only logical solution in Jacobs love filled mind is to kill August. But upon attempting to kill August in his sleep, he notices how innocent and defenseless he looks and seems to forget about all the terrible things August has done. “He 's dreaming. He moves suddenly, smacking his lips and rolling from his back onto his side. He reaches over to Marlena 's side of the bed and pats the empty space a few times.” This instance we realized that although so much about Jacob has changed, his basic human morals remain the same. The core of the boy that hopped onto the circus train is still there. No matter how necessary and how badly Jacob wants August to disappear, he just can’t follow through with the act.
