The Colours of Heroes

In the early weeks of March, in my Art Studies 1 class, we were asked to watch a movie entitled “Hero” and write a critical essay on the use of colours, its effect, and perceived meaning. The movie was well made and is different from others. The plot was simple with a twist and each scene was wonderfully made. The combination of the simple settings and vivid colours of the outfits of the characters complemented well and allowed the viewers to focus on the actors more. Moreover, it allowed the viewers to interpret a deeper meaning of the emotions projected in each scene.

Hero was set in ancient China, before its unification, during the warring states period. At this time, this place which did not identify itself as

Moreover, it gave an idea about the personality of the person wearing it. The state of Qin made use of the colour black to represent themselves. Everyone, from the townspeople, personal army of the palace, and the King, himself, wore either black robes or black armour. This made them look elegant, sophisticated, and well established, similar to the interpretation of modern day tuxedos and gowns. Moreover, the use of black gave them a dark and mysterious persona which piqued the audiences interest. It makes one wonder whether they’re the good guys or the bad. The scenes related to the introduction of the assassins involved vibrant coloured robes. This allowed the viewers to spot and identify them easily. Long Sky wore a mustard yellow robe. In a psychological study, yellow was revealed to align itself with confidence, self-esteem, emotional strength, and friendliness which, in this case, accurately describes the character. Long Sky was arrogant and he prided himself with his great swordsmanship. However, he valued his relationships, especially his friendship with Nameless, and let go of his pride in order to help him succeed. On

This movie “glory” tells us the story of the 54th regiment of Massachusetts. This is a big moment in American history because it was one of the first times that colored men where allowed to be soldiers. This movie also shows us how colored soldiers were treated during the civil war. This movie gives us many examples of how different the colored soldiers were treated from the white soldiers. It shows us that even though there was no slavery in the north and colored people were free, there was still a lot of discrimination towards colored people.…

Discrimination has become painfully familiar in our society. There are many issues that threaten our society and many problems we face on a daily basis, and some when addressed, can lead to great social advances. Some people would argue that homosexuality threatens us as a society, and unfortunately, these feelings have not ended with just civilians, some people insisting that homosexuals serving openly in the military threaten unit cohesion and military effectiveness. Although it has been proven that the repeal of the ban on gays in the armed forces would have a minimal negative impact on the military's effectiveness or unit compatibility, it has not always been this way. After two escapes from highly guarded prisons, various bank robberies, and several high-speed shooting sprees, John Dillinger met his end in our very own Lincoln Park, bringing great satisfaction to the FBI. The movie Public Enemies focuses on the creation of the modern Federal Bureau of Intelligence and the search for the infamous Chicago gangster as he travels from Indiana to Chicago throughout 1933, trying to dodge his inevitable fate. Most of the United States was deep into the Great Depression at this point, but Dillinger and his men lived rather lavishly throughout this movie. Organized crime was rampant, and criminals knew they needed to have each other’s backs in order to escape the advances of the FBI. As Johnny Depp and Christian…

Without any conflict a story-(read: a movie)-is boring. Some people are drawn to the dark motives and actions of the villains and because of this more often than not the villain is more liked than the hero. Movies have transpired to show the hero in a good light that’s enjoyable and believable. But a man’s worth can only ever truly be measured by the weight of those that stand against them. In days of old it was easy enough to throw a black hat on a man and show him shoot a few people and have the white hat ride in and save the day and voila the good guy is the shining example of heroism.…

Narrative & Composition The Incredibles Film Analysis Portfolio The reason I chose the 2004 Pixar Animation film The Incredibles, directed by Brad Bird, as my independent film analysis is because of, despite it being a children's film, there is so much more meaning to the computer animated superhero movie than it simply being an entertainment for toddlers. Some qualities the film explores are the way the public interacts with people who have amazing extraordinary abilities; it demonstrates how society prefers to have basic individuals rather than unique people; and suggests that normal people can't become great, no matter how much determination is present. The movie also does an amazing job with giving the family different goals they wish to aspire but only do so when they come together as a family.…
