Roy Lichtenstein, Hopeless.1968
In Roy Lichtenstein’s painting Hopeless.1968, he illustrates a woman seemingly distraught in a realm of hopelessness. It conveys her inescapable emotions manifested in tears. She is clearly consumed by frustration. The facial expression intensifies the fact that she is in deep sorrow about something she is unable to change. Also these elaborate lines effectively guide the viewer’s eyes throughout the painting. The Horizontal lines between the woman’s face and the table gives a sense of rest in her position. This painting is also made of diagonal curved lines illustrating movement. In total the lines were used to instill a sense of shape too.
Moving on to color, Lichtenstein elaborately used color to attract the eyes of the viewer. He used black for the outline, creating a huge contrast when he applied bright yellow, blue, white, and red. A bright yellow was used on the woman’s hair which elevated the intensity of the painting, adding a sense of enthusiasm. The tears dripping down the woman’s face, was colored in white, this goes to show how unnatural the painting is. Roy Lichtenstein primarily used primary hues to compose Hopeless.1963.
The focal area is the woman’s despaired face. The painting is very intimate (up close), in order to emphasize the sharp details. If you look closely at the single tear, Lichtenstein cleverly gave the viewer the illusion that the tear is dropping. (Capturing a single moment in time). The addition white shapes on the table depict the accumulation of even more tears. The viewer is lead to be captivated by the lady’s eyes due to the outlined directional lines leading to the eyes.
