“A caning in Singapore stirs up a fierce debate about crime and punishment” (Reyes 181). Both texts “Rough Justice” by Alejandro Reyes and “Time to Assert American Values” by New York Times, have their own point of views with handling the Michael Fay situation. “Rough Justice” is for harsh punishments if laws are broken. “Time to Assert American Values” is going against tough punishments such as caning or death. In “Time to Assert American Values” they feel like the person should be punished, but no with bitter abuse. Another author from New York Times explains’ “So, the argument goes, when Americans express outrage over a punishment that cause permanent scarring- in this case caning,- they are committing an act of cultural arrogance (“Time to Assert American Values” 179). The punishment wouldn't have happened and it wouldn't have decreased the caning of Michael if it didn't spread to America. New York Times also quoted, “Americans concerned with the propagation of traditional values at home should be equally energetic in asserting constitutional principles in the international contest of ideas ( “Time to Assert American Values” 179). The Americans worry more about what's going on in other place than in their our country. Singapore feels like the Americans worry about their own punishments and they handle it their own way. “While this country cannot dictate to the government of Singapore” (“Time to Assert American Values” 179). The American government can't control Singapore’s government but they can tried to encourage them to do the right thing. “Time to Assert American Values” uses logical evidence because it shows facts and information on how punishments should be handled. “Rough Justice” uses anecdotal evidence to show how they judge people by a witness who probably didn’t even see what really happened. “Rough Justice” has many reasons of why that particular story is more credible than “Time to Assert American Values.” Alejandro uses imagery to make the reader understand what would happened if they broke the law.
