The Book Thief Short Story

I look down at the black book in my hands, or rather what’s left of it. The spine of the book had long since disintegrated, facing the weight of my travels. The pages ripped and crumpled, all held together by two stitches of frayed thread. But no matter. I have read this story a legion of times. I have travelled near and far, spreading the book thief’s words. I have told the book so many times that I could never forget. Now, you may have been wondering throughout all my narrations how I, Death, found out about her story to begin with. I will tell you now. I stared at the beginning of Himmel Street, squinting to make out the houses in the dark night. Not a single star was in the sky, the moon covered by an ominous dark cloud. But the street was calm, no signs of the impending danger of what was approaching. It had seemed that I had arrived early. But as I start to walk down the street, the …show more content…
I picked up her soul mid snore, with her mouth open and drool dripping onto her pillow with a now damp circle. I am sure that had she seen me creeping into her home, she would’ve called me a Saukrel, that it would not offend me. I have observed that throughout this book, that Rosa Hubermann called everyone that. Especially the people close to her heart. And do not underestimate her, for she does have a heart, and it is one of the biggest I have ever seen. She gave food and housed a Jew without a second guess. And she gave a sketchbook to a teenage girl with the little money that she earned. I took care with her soul, giving a silent promise to Hans to keep her safe and away from harm’s way. I didn’t question where Rudy, Liesel, and Hans were. I could hear Liesel’s musical voice seeping through the floorboards as she recited her story. At the time, I didn’t know what she was reciting, but after reading the book, I know that she was showing them her book. I could feel Rudy and Hans’ warm souls down with her, keeping her company as she

The Power of Literature Hideous and atrocious acts have been committed throughout time; however, none of them are more despicable than the Holocaust. It was during this time that roughly six million Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis. It is a piece of history that is taught in millions of classrooms across the world. There are various ways of telling this chilling tale and for the most part, it is presented in a factual, history book-type lesson. This can be interesting and beneficial; however it leaves human emotion out of the story and with so many emotions involved refusing to convey them would only be telling part of the story.…

Shimmering lights lit up the crowded streets of New York City like the stars of the night sky; they made up for the fact that you couldn’t see the real ones. My feet felt like concrete blocks attached to my legs as I walked, I guess you could call it, through numerous groups of locals and tourists, all I’m sure who could tell easily that I had quite an edge. They didn’t know why, and frankly neither did I. All I knew was that I wanted to be by her side. I had first encountered Mabel one random night when I stumbled upon the 42 Club after leaving work, grimy and dirty from fixing up snobby, rich guys' cars all day and hating my life.…

It was a night like most others in the abandoned ghost town. All I saw was darkness and shadows creeping around every corner. I heard the howls of coyotes and the hooting of owls through the midnight air. The whistling wind rang the rusty, wind chimes dangling from the old run-downed mansion. The sign above read “Muddy Creek Manor”.…

This book caught my attention because I heard that it was narrated by Death and I wanted to see Death’s perspective of the millions of deaths that happened during WWII. Liesel is a pure German whose foster family doesn’t conform to Hitler’s Nazi policies. As a result, she struggles during the war through all her hardships but the one thing that always keeps her hopeful are books. She walked down the cold, dark corridor as she felt the soft and quiet wind run her by causing her to experience an ice-cold chill that ran up her spine. It was merely past six in the afternoon, yet the eerie atmosphere made it appear as if she were standing in the middle of a cemetery at the darkest hour of the night. The hot, moisty air made her clothes and hair cling to her skin. Her hands began to shake and sweat trickled down her palms. She swore she heard someone’s voice whisper her name, but perhaps it was simply the wind.…
