ROOM is a novel that follows two protagonists by the name of Jack and “Ma” and their daily routine while being in captivity at the hands of Old Nick. Jack is a five year old boy who is the son of Ma and the only company she’s got in Room so Ma tries has much has possible to give Jack a productive life in Room by strengthening his motor skills in hopes that when the day comes that they do get rescued, Jack will at least be able be able to transition into the world because she wants to give her son the life she could never have. For example by the quote provided from the novel: “Ma’s chewing her lip, there’s a dark bit. “Yeah, but I’m from somewhere else, like her. A long time ago, I was----” (82) This obviously demonstrates how Ma is trying to get her point across in a way that Jack would be able to understand and unfortunately due this all being new to him and he feels overwhelmed by all these new startling revelations, he just wants to ignore the facts and continue on with his sheltered life but Ma won’t allow him not believe in the beauty of the outside world because she’s was getting ready to plot their …show more content…
While in the clinic, Jack starts to experience a lot of new things that he never experienced when he was in Room such as more open space, outside, stairs, and many more things that we consider common whenever we go through our daily routine. Ma is loving the feeling of being free from Room and trying to enjoy it as much as possible by taking her first shower in 7 years. While Ma seems to be taking it easy with things in the clinic, Jack isn’t really enjoying it much because his whole routine is off because Ma feels like they don’t have to do all the things they used to do, they can do whatever they want now because they’re free now but Jack doesn’t feel free outside of Room. “Ma said we’d be free, but this doesn’t feel like free” (p. 257) This quote perfectly highlights how Jack is feeling Post-Room and it makes sense because he doesn’t understand this world because the world he knew was back in that shed in Old Nick’s backyard and he also feels this way because ever since the rescue, Jack notices that they’ve all been stressed from the interview and the adjustment period in the clinic and Jack clearly expressed that deep feeling after Ma overdosed and he had to be taken to his Grandma’s house until Ma was stabilized and nursed back to health. For Jack, this was a never ending cycle

Creating a secondary world that includes recovery, consolation and escapism is a very important component of modern fantasy. Many critics do not believe that Carroll succeeds in creating recovery and therefore consolation in his work Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Although this is a children’s book, Carroll is able to succeed in creating a literary work that can also pertain to adults. Through the maturation of Alice in her dream, and her return from the dream, we are given a sense of “return and renewal of health” that Tolkien says contributes to the aspect of recovery. Although, Carroll’s ending is short and may leave the reader hanging, it does include a sense of recovery and consolation.…

Brie Larson, who already had impressed me in “Short Term 12”, gives a spectacular performance, together with the young Jacob Tremblay, in the suspenseful drama “Room”, directed by Lenny Abrahamson (“Frank”) from a screenplay by Emma Donoghue based on her own 2010 international best-seller novel of the same name. The story follows a protective, caring mother, Joy (Larson), and her sensitive five-year-old son, Jack (Tremblay), whose lives are limited to a small space that they call room. The room is actually a shed, placed in a desolated backyard and well protected with a code lock system, which is owned by a man known as Red Nick who seven years before had abducted Joy, confining her to a life of forced imprisonment. So, it’s easy to conclude that Jack is…

This stage comes to terms when the child is somewhere in between ages seven and 11. Obviously Jack is only five years old when the big escape happens, but he can still relate to some of the developments that should be happening in this time of his life. According to WebMd, children “...begin to realize that one's own thoughts and feelings are unique and may not be shared by others or may not even be part of reality.” Jack has a taste of this when there is a family outing to what was supposed to be to the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs, but only ended up being to the mall.
