Analysis Of Rinaldi's 'Sacrifice In Othello'

Something I don’t appreciate is how Frederic has chosen no other girl to express his love to than his friend’s love. Rinaldi had bluntly told Frederic that he loved Catherine Barkley to the point that he was considering marry her. Rinaldi chose Frederic amongst all other people to bring with him to see Catherine so that Frederic could assist him in making a good impression on her. Not only has Frederic failed to help his friend, one who he has known for a while, win over Catherine, but he even has the audacity to physically show her love upon only his second encounter with her.
The character feels the severity behind war. Up until this point it did not seem like Frederic necessarily understood the seriousness of war. He overlooks a group of ambulance drivers and has not experienced the physical pain the war could bring first hand up until now. At this time in history, America had not yet entered the war. Frederic was so willing to be a part of the war that he enlisted in the Italian army even though he is an American. This peace and safety for others is brought by people killing each other. In this example, Bonello has killed someone on his own side for disobeying Frederic which clearly, no matter what angle you look at it from, will not bring about peace or the safety of others; it is just the senseless act of taking away a life. This demonstrates how war is nonsensical.
Something I notice is that rain plays a key role in this novel. In general, rain has a negative connotation and symbolizes sadness.
