Author Tim O’Brien, in his book, “The Things They Carried” uses memories, dreams and stories to resurrect the dead by keeping their soul alive. O’Brien’s purpose is to save our present self from the tragic memories of our past. In the chapter The Lives Of The Dead O’Brien suggest that blurring the lines between dream and reality tell a story that has the capacity to bring the victim back and save the person lamenting their death. The Lives Of The Dead chapter from The Things They Carried provides excellent examples of word choice, imagery and metaphor to clearly express to the audience the burden of death as well as to how individuals use storytelling as a coping mechanism towards death. O’Brien begins the chapter by explaining how soldiers tend to trivialize death as a way of mourning .…

In the book, “The Irresistible Revolution,” the main idea of the book was how to live a “true Christian lifestyle” which is based off of loving all of God’s humans, Christian or not, as well as God’s environment. In our class discussion of chapters one and two, a recurring idea is how some people who consider themselves Christians in church can act like good and righteous people helping others on Sundays, then turning around on Mondays and blowing off everyone else, just as long as they get the name of being a Christian in a church, rather than living and following the true Christian ways. In this book, the author also discussed that is some situations, you can find more people who live a Christian life lifestyle in a sewer than in a church.…

Modern day revolution?? Could a modern day revolution ever happen in the United States?could we overthrow our own government? I agree with Chuck Klosterman that armed revolution is not possible in modern America, I do believe that if our government became so unfair, and started to take advantage of their power and the people felt intensely deceived, we could revolutionize in another way. The constitution and the first amendment gives us another path to revolution, such as non violent, peaceful, and less destructive ways. The people could force radical changes in our government through protests and other legal actions.…

These chapters are meant to extend O'Brien's theme of wanting to honor the diseased or forgotten as well as emphasize the importance of storytelling. The importance of change in time and point of view, and remembering the fallen are emphasized and tied together in the last chapter “The Lives of the Dead”. O’Brien switches back and forth from telling a war story of the first dead guy he knew in war and how he learned how the men he was working with coped with grief to talking about a young girl named Linda with a brain tumor who passed away when she was young. O’Brien is able to show the change in time and point of view by referring to himself as both “Timmy” and “Tim.” Even though many years have passed, O’Brien still recalls a date they went on in fourth grade, “And so in the spring of 1956, when we were in fourth grade, I took her on the first real date of my life-”(216).…

What was the catalyst of the American Revolution? A person? An event? An action? It can be said that there was an American Revolution because of this unexpected bloodshed known as the Boston Massacre or the longstanding war known as the French and Indian War, however the paramount catalyst of this revolution really depends on the point of view the story is told from. The Boston Massacre may have sparked the series of events that instigated this insurgency, but the real instigators were the unfair taxes that caused the colonists to reject the rule of the British monarch.…
