The author, O. Henry, in the fictional narrative, “The Ransom of Red Chief”, uses comic language within the characters and comic situations in order to make his story humorous. To begin, the author uses the Superiority Theory to create a comic situation within the character, Bill Driscoll, who, along with another man (Sam) capture 10 year old Johnny Dorset because he is the son of Ebenezer Dorset, a wealthy man. Little did they know, Johnny liked to be kidnapped- and in charge. For example, when Bill writes a letter to Ebenezer demanding $2000 in order to have his son back, Ebenezer responds to the letter, writing, “You bring Johnny home and pay me two hundred and fifty dollars in cash, and agree to take him off your hands” (O. Henry 78). This example represents the Superiority Theory because…

Written in 1907 by William Sydney Porter, The Ransom of Red Chief is replete with different literary techniques used to reflect upon the intended meaning of the story. William Porter, also known as O. Henry, is very notable for using his superb knowledge of writing to pull the reader into his short stories. Specifically, the literary devices that he utilizes, such as the irony in the climax of The Ransom of Red Chief, when the father turns out demanding money to take the kid back, fuel the plot and entice the reader. The overall message that O. Henry is trying to portray is essentially that certain, planned events don’t always unfold as you expect them to. O. Henry hints at this intended meaning by pairing symbolism and characters, tone and style, and most importantly, irony and plot into his short story.…
