Kavish S. Mehta, Rutvij J. Sonecha, Parth D. Daxini, Parth B. Ratanpara, Miss Kapilani S. Gaikwad et.al. (2014): They used black cotton soil from Rajkot Gujrat and determined various engineering properties of the black cotton soil having medium to low swelling property. They stabilized the black cotton soil by using lime. Changes in the engineering properties of the black cotton soil before and after the stabilization by lime were observed on the basis of tests such as liquid limit, plastic limit, optimum moisture content , Max. dry density and California bearing ratio. By performing all these tests they concluded that lime can be utilized for strengthening the black cotton soil and lime mixing with clay present in the black cotton soil makes the cemented material.

They studied the improvements in the properties of expansive soil with fly ash and lime in varying percentages. They performed test such as liquid limit, standard proctor compaction, and differential free swelling test obtained on expansive clays mixed at different proportions of lime and fly ash admixture. Results shows that the stabilized clay had lesser swelling potential whereas increase in optimum moisture content had been observed. From their results it was clear that a change of the expansive soil texture took place. When lime & fly ash are mixed with the expansive soil, the Plastic limit increased by mixing lime and liquid limit decreased by mixing fly ash, which decreases plasticity index. With increase in the amount of fly ash & lime there was deduction in modified dry density & free swell index. Optimum moisture content was also reduced. From their work it is clear that the mixing expansive soil in certain proportion with lime and fly ash is an effective way to handle the problem of shrinkage, swelling and unequal

Concrete has been used since ancient times. Regular Roman concrete for example was made from volcanic ash (pozzolana), and hydrated lime. Roman concrete was superior to other concrete recipes (for example, those consisting of only sand and lime) used by other nations. Besides volcanic ash for making regular Roman concrete, brick dust can also be utilized. Besides regular Roman concrete, the Romans also invented hydraulic concrete, which they made from volcanic ash and clay.…

Within recent decades, there has been an experience in the decrease of the soil health and fertility around the world. There are many causes to this, which will be explained later on into this essay. This is a problem that needs to have more focus put on it because soil health and fertility is arguably the basis for all of our foods and without having healthy and fertile soil, there will be a decrease in the amount of crops produced. But not only is the amount of crops produced affected, the overall nutrient level in the food that farmers are growing is lower than ever experienced. This can all be traced back to the loss in the nutrients in the soil due to various farming techniques that have been being practiced widely throughout the world…

This is important as it helps increase understanding of the soil texture and helps to determine the bulk density and porosity. Bulk density is the measure of relative soil compaction, as expressed in total mass per total volume. This helps determine the porosity of the soil and how compacted the soil is. As the bulk density increases so too does the compaction of the soil and the porosity decreases. The purpose of the lab was to…
