Hidden Figures In the movie Hidden Figures, numerous acts of brutal racism and sexism are displayed throughout the film. During the movie Katherine and her two friends, Dorothy and Mary, overcome the struggles of working in a racist and sexist environment. Whether it be the male co-workers deeming the African American women incapable, or the other characters in the movie directly segregating the colored women in this film. Every day at work was a constant battle, and these three women felt like they had something to prove. Racism and sexism were prevalent in the era that the movie was based in, and it was an unnecessary battle for the people affected, specifically the three African American females in this film. The initial scene in the beginning of the movie, the three colored women were questioned by a white, male cop that told them that he did not know that NASA hired women and he implied it was because males are more capable of working there. The cop also seems very skeptical and made it obvious that he thought these three women are incapable of repairing their vehicle. Later in the movie Mr. Johnson, Katherine’s love interest, expresses his opinion on how it surprises him that NASA lets women perform such important tasks and tries to make Katherine feel belittled. The male characters in this film made the women feel inferior and take try to take away their power.
