When one hears a song about living in America, most people think of dreaming big and achieving tremendous feats. Very few people can express the feeling and fears of trying to get by in life. Phonte expresses an overall incredible message of what to do in order to make it somewhere in the world as opposed to just being swallowed by society. In, “Dance in the Reign,” Phonte is conveying that hard work is the key to being successful in America. Phonte is not just referring to America but no matter where someone is, they must work hard to be able to live the lives that they live on a day to day basis. His attitude towards hard work suggests that he cares and appreciates what he has. “This rap shit is not the life I live. It's a tool that I use, that's it,” in this line Phonte says that he uses rap as a tool in his life. That shows how he works for a good life. He could have chosen a life of crime to get by. He could have chosen to be arrested repeatedly and to steal money from those who work hard. Besides the fact of working hard at his career, he is also forced to work hard to stay out of trouble. It is difficult to take years in perfecting the house of cards and then watching it all tumble down. Phonte chooses to work hard and use rap as his most valuable tool. “Cause you to me is Dr. Seuss to a Steinbeck/a pro with the prose, what a concept,”(Phonte). Unlike the childish storytelling of Dr. Seuss, Phonte compares himself with the sophisticated storytelling of Steinbeck. Saying he is a pro with the pros refers as to him being an expert rap artist with outstanding poetry. This intellectual line further explains that Phonte is an extraordinary smart, and versatile individual and is capable of finding another suitable career with a good source of income.
