The poem, “Prisoner in my own mind” by Shayleen Carter is about her inner feelings and struggles with the reality of her not able to get good grades and the failure of believing in herself. This poem also explains how her feelings are affected by her stress of doing well in school. Carter finds herself lost in her thoughts and worries. She expresses how much of a struggle it is to escape the feelings and overwhelming emotions within her. In this poem, Carter uses a hyperbole, metaphor, and personification to portray that constant worrying can only lead to more worries.
Carter uses hyperboles to exaggerate that even the slightest worry can end up affecting one’s life or lifestyle. This is shown when Carter says, “My brain is scrambled and in knots” (Carter 2).
