Jane and Laila are two character that are in analogous situations and have similar personalities and functions in their respective novels.Jane in Pride and Prejudice is depicted as a sweet tempered, beautiful and relatively naive girl. She is always willing to see the best in everybody and never suspects even the most suspicious characters of having ulterior motives or doing anything that might hurt her. At the beginning of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Laila is just a kid and has a similar characterization as bright, sweet, beautiful, and still innocent young girl though she is much more strong willed and independent than Jane.Both characters are thrown into similar situations when they find their lovers taken away from them by outside circumstances …show more content…
Laila replies that she does not want him to leave and instead wants him to stay and meet Aziza. This is parallel to the scene in Pride and Prejudice where Elizabeth and Darcy are on a walk together and Elizabeth thanks him for his intervention in Lydias unfavorable marriage circumstances, and Mr. Darcy tells her that his feelings for her haven’t changed, that he still loves her and asks how she feels and states that if her feelings haven’t changed he will leave her alone and never say another word on the subject. Elizabeth replies that her feelings have changed and that now she does love him back. In both scenes the male companions show a high level of regard, respect, and love for their female counterpart. They both put Elizabeth’s and Laila’s respective interests above their own and show that hey love them so much that they just want them to be happy whether thats with or without them doesn’t matter.Unlike Rasheed who literally does not care at all about how Laila feels about anything Tariq makes sure Laila’s comfortable with what he’s proposing before going ahead and inserting himself into her life. The Titanic serves as a symbol for all of Kabul since it has been taken over by the Taliban and plagued by war and famine turning the once progressive booming city into an all but deserted one. The passengers of the ship are a symbol for the citizens of Kabul. The whole city is in a craze over the movie they all watch it and fall in love with it even though they are not allowed to watch it as a result of the taliban cracking down on media use. Laila professes that everybody enjoys the Titanic so much because they just want Jack to come in and save them all and later states that Jack won’t save them. However Laila believes she has found her jack when Tariq comes back for her and gives her a new opportunity to get away from Rasheed.
